Hedlight Repair & Restoration
Headlights that have stopped working or show visible signs of damage can often be repaired through our available services. Fixing faulty headlights helps prevent costly replacements, avoid MOT failures, and improves overall light output and performance. Headlights with minor damage may be eligible for our restoration and lens polishing service.
Common Headlight Issues
Burned-Out or Non-Working Daytime Running Lights (DRLs)
Daytime Running Lights over time, the LEDs or internal circuits can fail. Repairing DRLs involves diagnosing whether the issue lies in the LED modules or the circuit board. Once identified, faulty parts can be replaced, restoring full DRL functionality.
Condensation and Moisture Inside the Headlight
Fogged-up headlights from the inside are the main cause of damage to the internal components. To permanently fix this, the headlight must be removed and resealed. A high-grade automotive sealant is used to ensure the housing remains airtight, preventing the problem from recurring.
This repair ensures a long-term solution and is more cost-effective than replacing the entire headlight, especially considering the uncertainty of used parts or the possibility of the problem recurring.
Damaged Circuit Boards
Control modules manage various lighting elements, including DRLs, indicators, and adaptive features. Most commonly, moisture ingress can cause corrosion or electrical failure. If repair is still possible, it includes careful inspection, cleaning, and replacement of burnt or corroded components. In most cases, this saves the customer from having to replace the entire headlight unit.
Headlight Restoration & Lens Polishing
Even if your headlights still work, over time their lenses can become yellowed, hazy, or dull—usually due to UV exposure, road debris, or moisture. This not only affects the appearance of your vehicle but also limits visibility and safety during nighttime driving. If your lens is cracked it will have to be replaced immediately.
What Does the Restoration Involve?
The restoration process may involve one, several, or all of the steps listed below, depending on the condition of each individual headlight. We begin with a thorough assessment to determine what work is necessary, then advise you on the recommended options. Below is an overview of the possible restoration steps:
1. Cleaning the Interior of the Headlight
In some cases, dirt or haze builds up inside the headlight housing. This requires disassembly of the unit, followed by detailed cleaning. Once cleaned, the interior is dried and deagreased before resealing.
2. Lens Polishing and Oxidation Removal
The most common restoration step is polishing the outer lens. This process removes surface oxidation and restores clarity. Multiple grades of wet sanding may be used, followed by polishing compounds that bring the lens back to a clear, like-new finish.
3. UV Protection Application
After polishing, it’s critical to apply a UV-resistant clear coat. Without it, lenses can quickly return to their faded condition. A professional-grade sealant or ceramic coating helps preserve clarity and extend the life of the restoration.
4. Lens Resealing
If moisture has previously entered the housing, it’s often due to compromised seal. As part of the restoration, old sealant is removed and replaced with fresh, high-quality butyl sealant to prevent future fogging and damage.
